How to use AI without losing your voice
By Tandem
Your team is already using AI. That is not a problem to solve, it is a fact to work with. The real question is whether all of that speed is building your brand or slowly wearing it down.
The risk is not the AI. It is the drift.
Generic AI is fluent in every voice, which means it defaults to no one's in particular. Ask five people on your team to use it, and you will get five slightly different versions of your brand, each one drifting a little differently from the last. None of them is wrong, exactly. But multiply those small differences across a year of captions, emails, decks, and posts, and the through-line that made the brand recognizable starts to blur.
This is not a people problem. Good marketers produce this drift precisely because they are moving fast with a powerful tool. It is a systems problem, and it has a systems answer.
Give it a center to work from
The fix is not less AI. It is a shared source of truth that every person and every tool draws from. When the voice, the rules, and the approved language all live in one place, the AI stops guessing and starts sounding like you, no matter who is at the keyboard. The tool becomes an extension of the brand instead of a threat to it.
A few practical guardrails
Write your voice down, specifically. "Confident and friendly" is not enough to hold a line. What does the brand always do, never do, and how does it shift from a press release to a Reddit reply.
Feed it examples, not just rules. A handful of genuinely on-brand pieces teaches tone better than a page of adjectives ever will.
Keep one memory, not many. Brand knowledge that lives in one person's private chat history leaves the day they do. Knowledge the whole team shares only compounds.
Review against the brand, not your gut. "Does this sound like us" becomes a standard you can actually hold the moment the standard is written down somewhere everyone can point to.
Speed and consistency are not a trade
You do not have to choose between moving fast and staying on brand. That is the entire point. With a center to work from, AI becomes the thing that lets a small team hold a large, consistent presence, the kind that used to take a department. Use every tool you want. Just give them all the same place to start.
Build boldly. Stay the course.
